John,

I have a quick question for you relating to your Beaulieu 4008 Pro. Im looking for a
Super 8mm Camera to shoot surfers down in Costa Rica. I'm interested in buying a
Beaulieu 4008. I not interested in the ZM/ZMII or ZM3 due to there auto features.

The problem is I'm having a lot of trouble finding a 4008S or 4008 "Pro" like yours. Is
your 4008 "Pro" an different model modified? Or Im i missing something when
searching online for a "Pro". I've seen one web page with a 4008s that looks identical
to your pro with a different color paint (neon green). Do you know were i could start to
track down a solid 4008 Pro or 4008 S?

Hello Mario:

A 4008 Pro is typically a modified 4008 ZMII or 4008ZMIV.

1. Remove built-in 85 filter
2. Remove the handle
3. Add a battery connector for an external battery back
4. Use lenses with NO AUTO FEATURES
-- no electronic zoom - no auto exposure motors
5. Repaint the camera body when it is all apart

4008 ZMII -- 1 to 70 fps
4008ZMIV -- 1 to 80 fps

Surfers in Costa Rica
You may want to use a camera with a very long
telephoto lens - so a Beaulieu would work for you
because it has a c-mount lens system.

My first choice is typically a Canon 1014XL-S
It is rugged and takes AA batteries.
The lens is 6.5 to 65mm
There is a telephoto adapter that goes to 90mm
That's a very long lens / telephoto for Super 8.

A Canon 1014E lens is 7mm to 70mm

A Nizo 801 Macro lens is 7mm to 80mm
-- that's very long / telephoto in Super 8

With a Beaulieu c-mount camera
you could use a c-mount to Nikon adapter
or c-mount to Canon adapter and use
any of their still camera telephoto lenses:
100mm 200mm 250mm.

At that length your tripod and fluid head would need to be
100% rock solid - even then the image would shake / vibrate.

Advantages:
1. c-mount lenses
2. slow motion from 1 to 70 fps or 80fps

Not Good
1. Charging the battery pack is a hassle
2. the image in the viewfinder flickers because
of the shutter
3. the image in the viewfinder gets darker
as you close down the F stop from 4 to 8 to 16 to 22
-- hard to see and difficult to focus

Surfing focus may always be an infinity though.
